E sabe o que mais? Eu conheço um monte de gente que também aprendeu inglês sozinho.
E sabe mais o quê? Eles não são gênios… Não, não.
Então como eles conseguiram? Eu vou te contar!
Usaram algumas técnicas e regras. São várias, mas para não te sobrecarregar eu vou falar de duas e mais um bônus.

1. PRIMEIRA: TENHA UM MOTIVO CLARO!
É isso mesmo, você tem que ter um motivo.
Já esteve em alguma aula em que algum aluno estava vendo a matéria do professor e de repente levanta a mão e pergunta. Professor, para quê serve isso?
Já viu? Essa é a pergunta mais importante.
Por isso vou repetir essa pergunta para você.
Para quê serve o inglês para você?
Não para o cara que vai apresentar num congresso internacional.
Nem para aquele que vai conseguir uma promoção e receber um salário maior.
Nem para aquele que vai ter acesso a informações internacionais de qualidade.
Não. Estou perguntando para você!

Pensa aí, onde o inglês vai te ajudar?
Para quê serve aprender inglês?
Qual o seu motivo para aprender?
Vou te contar qual era o meu motivo.
Eu fiquei sabendo de um livro que era muito bom (eu não vou falar qual é aqui, se tiver muito curioso me pergunta depois…rsrsr).
Só tinha um problema, ele só tinha em inglês.
Não tinha tradução e a pessoa falou o seguinte: “Ou você aprende inglês para ler, ou você nunca vai saber o que tem no livro!”.
Aquilo me deixou….AAAAHHHHRRRRGGGGG!
Me deixou angustiado.
Foi um PPÁÁÁ!… Soco na cara!
Ou você aprende ou nunca vai ler esse livro.
E para você?
Ou aprende inglês ou você nunca….! ( o quê te angustia?)
Ou aprende inglês ou você nunca….! ( o quê também te angustia?)
Blz? Conseguiu entender o que é o seu motivo?
Bom. Se você já tem isso claro então vamos para a segunda regra.
2. SEGUNDA: FOQUE NO SEU MOTIVO!
Quando eu entendi que eu queria ler o livro eu já comecei a aprender inglês com o livro do lado para ver se eu estava tendo alguma evolução.
O livro era o meu balizador.
Eu comecei a estudar um outro livro em inglês e português com um vocabulário semelhante para já ir me familiarizando com o vocabulário.
Eu pensei assim: “Na pior das hipóteses, se eu não aprender inglês eu aprendo o suficiente para conseguir ler o livro”.
Só que tem muita gente que tem um motivo, mas fica estudando outra coisa que não tem nada a ver o com o motivo dele.
Por exemplo: O cara quer entender artigos acadêmicos e fica estudando livros de gramática. Não tem nada a ver. O que ele tem que fazer, estudar artigos acadêmicos em inglês.
Outro exemplo: O cara quer passar numa entrevista de emprego que será em inglês. Então ele precisa de conversação. Só que sabe como ele estuda? Lendo…, ele fica só lendo. Não! Isso está errado. Esse cara tem que marcar para conversar com alguém. Ele vai precisar falar e ouvir.
Quer mais um exemplo? O cara quer viajar. Sabe o que ele faz? Pega provas… Fica estudando para passar na prova. Vou gabaritar essa prova aqui. Só que quando ele for pedir comida no restaurante ninguém vai querer saber que nota ele tirou na prova.
Agora sabe o que acontece com quem estuda para a prova? Passa na prova! Não é verdade? Claro que é, mas só faz isso.
Não viaja, não entende artigo acadêmico e não consegue promoção no trabalho.
Estou mentindo? Ou é o que acontece com 90% dos alunos no Brasil? Pelo menos é o que os dados estatísticos dizem, que só 5% da população brasileira fala inglês. Sendo que praticamente 90% passaram nas provas da escola.
Acho que deu para entender, né?
3. BÔNUS: COMO AUMENTAR SEU VOCABULÁRIO COM ISSO
Muito bem, nesse processo eu aprendi o que fazer para focar no meu motivo e conseguir ler o livro que eu queria.
Quando eu decidi aprender inglês eu tive uma informação que foi revolucionária para mim e hoje eu vou compartilhá-la com você. Preparado?
Muito bem, a informação foi a seguinte: Um grupo de pesquisadores descobriu que se uma pessoa souber 3.000 palavra em outro idioma ela consegue se comunicar naquele idioma.
E ponto! É só isso!
Não precisa entender de artigo, preposição, conjunção, phrasal verbs, pronome pessoal do caso reto e oblíquo.
Não, tudo isso já está embutido nessas 3.000 palavras.
Wow! Que da hora! Então é só ir no google, digitar “lista de palavras em inglês”, pegar uma listona lá, contar 3.000, mandar a ver para decorar e eu vou falar inglês?
Não!
Não vai dar certo. Porque não adianta ser quaisquer palavras, precisam ser palavras úteis para você, dentro do seu contexto. Dentro do seu motivo. Lembra que eu falei sobre focar no seu motivo?
4. CONCLUSÃO
Então como que eu fiz?
Eu olhei para o canto e vi um livro. Daí eu pensei, quantas palavras será que tem naquele livro? E aí eu te pergunto. Será que um livro tem mais do que 3.000 palavras? E eu te digo. Com certeza. Muito mais! A não ser que seja aqueles livrinhos da pré-escola, mas se pegar um livro normal vai ter mais do que 3.000 palavras.
Wow! Que da hora! Então quer dizer que se eu pegar 1 livro. Um só, e estudar todas as palavras daquele livro eu vou conseguir entender inglês? Simmm!!!
É isso, é isso, é só isso!
Se você conseguir entender 1 livro você terá vocabulário suficiente para entender praticamente qualquer outro livro.
Quando eu percebi isso, eu escolhi um livro e devorei!

HOW TO LEARN ENGLISH ON YOUR OWN
Hello, this is Felipe Costa, and I have something really cool to tell you.
You know what it is? I learned English on my own.
And you know what else? I know a bunch of people who also learned English on their own.
And you know what else? They’re not geniuses… No, they’re not.
So how did they do it? Let me tell you!
They used some techniques and rules. There are several, but to not overwhelm you, I’ll talk about two and a bonus one.

1. FIRST: HAVE A CLEAR MOTIVE!
That’s right, you have to have a motive.
Have you ever been in a class where a student was looking at the teacher’s material and suddenly raises their hand and asks, “Teacher, what’s this for?”
Have you seen that? That’s the most important question.
So I’ll repeat that question to you.
What is English for you?
Not for the guy who’s presenting at an international conference.
Not for the one who’s going to get a promotion and a higher salary.
Not for the one who will have access to quality international information.
No. I’m asking you!
Don’t know yet?
That’s okay, take a break from reading and make an effort.
Think, where will English help you?
What’s the point of learning English?
What’s your reason for learning?
I’ll tell you what my motive was.
I heard about a book that was really good (I won’t tell you which one here, if you’re really curious, ask me later… haha).
There was just one problem, it was only available in English.
There was no translation, and the person said the following: “Either you learn English to read it, or you’ll never know what’s in the book!”
That got me….AAAAHHHHRRRRGGGGG!
It left me anxious.
It was like a WHAM!… Punch in the face!
Either you learn it or you’ll never read this book.
And for you?
Either learn English or you’ll never….! (What makes you anxious?)
Either learn English or you’ll never….! (What else makes you anxious?)
Got it? Did you understand what your motive is?
Great. If you already have that clear, then let’s move on to the second rule.
2. SECOND: FOCUS ON YOUR MOTIVE!
When I realized I wanted to read the book, I started learning English with the book by my side to see if I was making any progress.
The book was my benchmark.
I started studying another book in English and Portuguese with a similar vocabulary to get familiar with it.
I thought like this: “In the worst-case scenario, if I don’t learn English, I learn enough to be able to read the book.”
But a lot of people have a motive and end up studying something unrelated to their motive.
For example: The guy wants to understand academic articles and studies grammar books. It’s unrelated. What he needs to do is study academic articles in English.
Another example: The guy wants to pass a job interview that will be in English. So he needs conversation skills. But you know how he studies? Reading… he just reads. No! That’s wrong. This guy needs to arrange to talk to someone. He’ll need to speak and listen.
Want another example? The guy wants to travel. You know what he does? Takes tests… He studies to pass the test. I’m going to ace this test here. But when he goes to order food at the restaurant, no one cares what score he got on the test.
Now, do you know what happens to those who study for the test? They pass the test! Isn’t that true? Of course it is, but that’s all they do.
They don’t travel, they don’t understand academic articles, and they don’t get promoted at work.
Am I lying? Or is that what happens to 90% of students in Brazil? At least that’s what statistical data says, that only 5% of the Brazilian population speaks English. While practically 90% pass school tests.
I think you got it, right?
3. BONUS: HOW TO EXPAND YOUR VOCABULARY WITH THIS
Alright, in this process, I learned what to do to focus on my motive and be able to read the book I wanted.
When I decided to learn English, I had information that was revolutionary for me, and today I’m going to share it with you. Ready?
Alright, the information was this: A group of researchers discovered that if a person knows 3,000 words in another language, they can communicate in that language.
And that’s it!
You don’t need to understand articles, prepositions, conjunctions, phrasal verbs, personal pronouns in the nominative and oblique cases.
No, all of that is already embedded in those 3,000 words.
Wow! That’s awesome! So I just go to Google, type “list of English words,” grab a big list there, count 3,000, memorize them, and I’ll speak English?
No!
That won’t work. Because they can’t be just any words, they need to be useful words for you, within your context. Within your motive. Remember I talked about focusing on your motive?
4. CONCLUSION
So how did I do it?
I looked in the corner and saw a book. Then I thought, how many words do you think are in that book? And I ask you. Do you think a book has more than 3,000 words? And I’ll tell you. Definitely. Much more! Unless it’s one of those preschool books, but if you pick up a regular book, it will have more than 3,000 words.
Wow! That’s awesome! So you mean if I pick up 1 book. Just one, and study all the words in that book, I’ll be able to understand English? Yes!!!
That’s it, that’s it, that’s all there is to it!
If you can understand 1 book, you’ll have enough vocabulary to understand practically any other book.
When I realized that, I chose a book and devoured it!
Now, want to know if it worked? It worked very well! Not only for me, but for many others. More than 2,000 students have used this technique at Idioma Independente.
