Fernanda and Igor talk about the biggest party in Brazil.

Igor: Hello, Fernanda! It’s Carnival, how are you doing?
Fernanda: Hello Igor, I am very happy that it’s Carnival. It’s been, for me, 3 years since I’ve been to a Carnival, but for the rest of the people 2 years, so everyone is very excited here.
Igor: And where do you live? Tell us a little bit about your side of Carnival
Fernanda: I am from Salvador, Salvador – Bahia, like everyone in the rest of the world knows. Basically we have one of the biggest Carnivals in Brazil, and in the world, to be honest, it’s like, per day, 1 million people in the street… so it’s really big and the traditions basically are trios elétricos, the electric trucks or cars, and the artists go up there and they sing for like 6 hours straight and everyone follows the car and dances, and parties and drinks. Basically that’s what we do in Carnival. Almost the entire city parties, it’s more concentrated in Barra and Campo Grande , which are the two official circuits that we can go, but to be honest, the entire city parties.
Igor: You told me an interesting story about the origins of Carnival in Salvador. Tell us about that.
Fernanda: Basically 2 friends, Dodo and Osmar, they were musicians, in 1950 they just grabbed a car, put, I don’t know, a boombox in the back of the car, connected the instruments and started playing in the streets and walking around the streets people would just listen to the sound and start following them and that became a tradition. So musicians playing in a big car and people following them around, so that’s started in the past century and now that little car is a big truck that carries so many people and so many things and now it’s part of our culture and our identity.
Igor: I’m also from the northeast and I have, I mean it’s a smaller city, so I have a little version of that, I think all the cities, especially in the northeast, but culturally Brazil, have a small version of this. Carnival is a part of the street and people really go to the street, they missed it, just being together and actually forming a community and partying. That’s a great feeling to have. And how do you prepare for Carnival?
Fernanda: Ok, first thing I do is look at the schedule, so basically which artists are coming, because now Carnival is not only artists from Salvador, big artists like Anitta, Pabllo Vittar, they will be here for at least, one or two days. Salvador is a big place now and people from all over Brazil come to sing in Salvador. So look at the artists and look when and where they will be, because you don’t only have one place that you can go, you have many places. And the second thing is to choose your costume, if you wanna go in a costume, you can put on some fun makeup, some fun clothes, it’s really hot in here, it’s the middle of the summer, Salvador is already a hot place but in Carnival is way hotter so people go in bikinis, it’s completely normal for women to go in bikinis, to Carnival because it’s extremely hot, glitter is very used in Brazil and Salvador also, so just grab fun clothes and it’s a really nice time to express yourself in ways that you might not be able to do in the rest of the year.
Igor: As you said, you must look at the schedule, all throughout the cities there are different attractions, right?
Fernanda: I usually stay in a place and watch them go by, so I can enjoy most of the attractions and the people that I want to see singing. That’s how I prepare myself. Stay hydrated and be happy and party.

Fernanda: Olá Igor, estou muito feliz que é Carnaval. Para mim faz, 3 anos que não vou a um Carnaval, mas para o resto das pessoas 2 anos, então todos aqui estão muito animados.
Igor: E onde você mora? Nos conta um pouco sobre o seu lado do Carnaval.
Fernanda: Eu sou de Salvador, Salvador – Bahia, como todo mundo sabe. Basicamente temos um dos maiores carnavais do Brasil, e do mundo, pra falar a verdade, é tipo, por dia, 1 milhão de pessoas na rua… então é muito grande e a tradição basicamente são os trios elétricos, os caminhões ou carros elétricos , e os artistas sobem lá e cantam umas 6 horas seguidas e todo mundo segue o carro e dança, e festeja e bebe. Basicamente é isso que fazemos no Carnaval. Quase toda a cidade tem festa, é mais concentrada na Barra e Campo Grande, que são os dois circuitos oficiais que a gente pode ir, mas pra ser sincera, a cidade inteira tem festa.
Igor: Você me contou uma história interessante sobre as origens do Carnaval em Salvador. Nos conta sobre isso.
Fernanda: Basicamente 2 amigos, Dodô e Osmar, eles eram músicos, em 1950 eles simplesmente pegaram um carro, colocaram, sei lá, uma caixa de som no banco de trás do carro, ligaram os instrumentos e começaram a tocar na rua e andar pelas ruas. As pessoas apenas ouviam o som e começavam a segui-los e isso se tornou uma tradição. Então, músicos tocando em um carro grande e pessoas seguindo-os, isso começou no século passado e agora aquele carro pequeno é um caminhão grande que carrega tantas pessoas e tantas coisas e agora faz parte da nossa cultura e da nossa identidade.
Igor: Eu também sou do nordeste e tenho, quer dizer, é uma cidade menor, então eu tenho uma pequena versão disso, acho que todas as cidades, principalmente do nordeste, mas culturalmente em todo o Brasil, tem uma versão pequena disso . O carnaval faz parte da rua e as pessoas vão mesmo para a rua, sentiram falta, só de estar junto e realmente formar uma comunidade e festejar. É uma sensação ótima de se ter. E como você se prepara para o Carnaval?
Fernanda: Ok, a primeira coisa que eu faço é olhar a agenda, então basicamente quais artistas estão vindo. Porque agora o Carnaval não é só os artistas de Salvador, grandes artistas como Anitta, Pabllo Vittar, eles vão ficar aqui pelo menos, um ou dois dias. Salvador é um lugar grande agora e pessoas de todo o Brasil vêm cantar em Salvador. Então olhe os artistas e veja quando e onde eles estarão, porque você não tem apenas um lugar para onde ir, você tem muitos lugares. E a segunda coisa é escolher sua fantasia, se você quiser ir fantasiada, pode colocar uma maquiagem divertida, uma roupa divertida. Aqui está muito calor, estamos no meio do verão, Salvador já é um lugar quente, mas no carnaval é muito mais quente então as pessoas vão de biquíni, é totalmente normal as mulheres irem de biquíni, no carnaval porque é muito quente. Glitter é muito usado no Brasil e em Salvador também, então é só pegar roupas divertidas e é uma época muito legal para expresse-se de maneiras que talvez não consiga fazer no resto do ano.
Igor: Como você disse, tem que olhar a programação, em todas as cidades tem várias atrações, né?
Fernanda: Eu costumo ficar em um lugar e ficar vendo eles passarem, para poder aproveitar a maioria das atrações e as pessoas que eu quero ver cantando. É assim que me preparo. Mantenha-se hidratado e seja feliz e festeje.
