Daniel: So Bianca, what have you been playing lately?
Bianca: Well, I’ve been playing a few games actually, in the last few weeks I have been playing Elder Ring, but I think the game that I played the most has been League of Legends, unfortunately. And what about you?
Daniel: My condolences. I’ve been playing a lot of League of Legends lately, unfortunately also. Because it’s one of the games that my friends also play, so it’s the, like, “go-to” game, to play together.
Bianca: Yeah! I agree, my friends also like to play, usually to play an “aram” game. It’s way easier to find people to play with, it’s something that everybody likes, and it’s usually quick matches.
Daniel: But a while ago the game was only in English, before it came to Brazil, and even after it came, you can still change the settings to see the game in English. Besides that, we, even in Portuguese, we do use a lot of English terms related to the game.
Bianca: I’m a recent player in League, I started playing League because of the pandemic, and that’s kind of how I found friends online. The game was already in Portuguese, but I remember a lot of my friends were using terms like “oh, you need to farm, you need to gank, go bot, go top, go jungle”, and I didn’t understand. Like, I understood the word in English, but they were saying it in Portuguese, and I think for the first three weeks I was playing I didn’t know how to last hit a minion, I didn’t know how to buy items in the store, I had no idea how to do anything of those things.
Daniel: Yeah! There are some many terms that we kind of make brazilian, like “kiting”, I guess.
Bianca: Yeah, “kiting”, “freezing” the lane.
Daniel: “Pushing the lane”, we say like, “push” in Portuguese which is something else.
Bianca: Yeah, it’s the opposite, like you are not pulling the lane, you are pushing.
Daniel: Also the name of the items. I actually did leave the game in English for a long time, because it helped me learn new things and new terms, and also practice, because you need to read all those things and you also listen to the characters speaking. There are always these kind of jokes that they make between the characters, the things about the lore of the game, and that really helped me while I was learning.
Bianca: Yeah, me too. And not only the League, I think with every game that happens. Like, when I was a kid I used to play Need for Speed and I didn’t know any English, but you have the images of the cars. And like, for example, I wanted to change the engine, I didn’t know what was an engine, and then I realized what it was. All the car pieces, hood, wheels, windows, everything. It just started clicking in my head and I started comparing it to what I knew in Portuguese and the words that I didn’t know started to make sense.
Daniel: MMOs were the one that helped me a lot, because same story. I was very young, I had no idea of what I was doing, I didn’t understand anything about English, but you had the little images to go with the texts. So you had, like, a monster, sometimes in an MMO the monster is like an animal, literally, easy to understand, and I started making the connections. I remember I saw a butterfly in the game once and I was very confused, because I searched separately, butter and fly, and it didn’t make any sense.
Bianca: Why is the butter flying?
Daniel: Exactly! And that’s not the picture that goes with it, that makes no sense. Also, I think games were one of the most important things in my learning process, games and books.
Bianca: And I remember getting stuck in a few games and trying to find it online and then you would find a word “walkthrough”, the first time I saw the word “walkthrough” I thought it was the name of a phase or the name of a dungeon, I didn’t realize what it meant back then.
Daniel: Yeah, and it’s such an intimidating word, when you don’t really know English, because it’s so big and it has “through”, which is a complicated word.
Bianca: I remember like trying to find how to beat a boss or how to go through a certain phase and then I would read the walkthrough or watch the walkthrough and I would just like, use the translator or the dictionary even.
Daniel: It was such a struggle, because the instructions were there, you just needed to understand it. It was literally just a language barrier.

Daniel: Mas há um tempo atrás o jogo era apenas em inglês, antes de chegar ao Brasil, e mesmo depois de chegar, você ainda pode mudar as configurações para ver o jogo em inglês. Além disso, nós, mesmo em português, usamos muitos termos em inglês relacionados com o jogo.
Bianca: Eu sou uma jogadora recente de LoL, comecei a jogar LoL por causa da pandemia, e foi assim que encontrei amigos online. O jogo já estava em português, mas lembro que muitos dos meus amigos usavam termos como “oh, você precisa farmar, você precisa gankar, vai bot, vai top, vai jungle”, e eu não entendia. Tipo, eu entendia a palavra em inglês, mas eles estavam dizendo em português, e eu acho que nas três primeiras semanas em que eu estava jogando eu não sabia como finalizar uma tropa, eu não sabia como comprar itens na loja, eu não tinha idéia de como fazer nada dessas coisas.
Daniel: Sim! Há muitos termos que nós meio que abrasileiramos, como “caiting”, eu acho.
Bianca: Sim, “caiting”, “freezando” a rota.
Daniel: “Pushar a rota”, dizemos tipo, “push” em português que é algo diferente.
Bianca: Sim, é o oposto, não é como se você não estivesse puxando a rota, você está empurrando.
Daniel: Também o nome dos itens. Na verdade, eu deixei o jogo em inglês por muito tempo, porque me ajudou a aprender coisas novas e novos termos, e também a praticar, porque você precisa ler todas essas coisas e também ouvir os personagens falando. Há sempre esse tipo de piadas que eles fazem entre os personagens, as coisas sobre a história do jogo, e isso realmente me ajudou enquanto eu estava aprendendo.
Bianca: Sim, eu também. E não apenas no Lol, eu acho que com todo jogo acontece. Tipo, quando eu era criança costumava jogar Need for Speed e não sabia nenhum inglês, mas você tem as imagens dos carros. E como, por exemplo, eu queria mudar o motor, eu não sabia o que era um motor, e então percebi o que era. Todas as peças do carro, capô, rodas, janelas, tudo. As coisas começaram a conectar na minha cabeça e comecei a comparar com o que eu sabia em português e as palavras que eu não sabia começaram a fazer sentido.
Daniel: MMOs foram os que me ajudaram muito, foi a mesma história. Eu era muito jovem, não tinha idéia do que estava fazendo, não entendia nada de inglês, mas você tinha as pequenas imagens para acompanhar os textos. Então você tinha, tipo, um monstro, às vezes em um MMO o monstro é como um animal, literalmente, fácil de entender, e eu comecei a fazer as conexões. Lembro que uma vez vi uma borboleta no jogo e fiquei muito confuso, porque procurei separadamente, manteiga e voar, e isso não fazia sentido nenhum.
Bianca: Por que a manteiga está voando?
Daniel: Exatamente! E essa não é a imagem que acompanha, isso não faz sentido. Além disso, eu acho que os jogos foram uma das coisas mais importantes no meu processo de aprendizagem, jogos e livros.
Bianca: E me lembro de ficar presa em alguns jogos e tentar encontrá-lo online, e então você encontrava a palavra “walkthrough”, a primeira vez que vi a palavra “walkthrough” pensei que era o nome de uma fase ou o nome de uma masmorra, não percebi o que significava naquela época.
Daniel: Sim, e é uma palavra tão intimidadora, quando você não sabe realmente inglês, porque é tão grande e tem “through”, que é uma palavra complicada.
Bianca: Eu me lembro de tentar encontrar como vencer um chefe ou como passar por uma certa fase e então eu lia o passo a passo ou assistia ao guia e usava o tradutor ou até mesmo o dicionário.
Daniel: Foi uma grande luta, porque as instruções estavam lá, você só precisava entendê-las. Era literalmente apenas uma barreira linguística.
Bianca: Sim.
