Bianca: Hi, how are you?
Poliana: Hi, how are you girls?
Grace: I’m good. So, yesterday, a student of mine said to me that he was feeling very happy because he finally could study after he started his classes. And then I asked him why, and he said to me that he was feeling motivated now and he was not feeling so motivated before the classes. So I want to ask you guys, what do you think about this, what are the advantages of having classes and a teacher?
Bianca: Yeah, I think having a teacher helps you a lot to know what exactly you need to do, know where you should go, what’s the next step. And also, like, to have a commitment with someone else other than you. I think it’s, like, the best part of the learning process in that sense.
Poliana: Yeah, I agree. I’m actually trying to learn a new language, I’m trying to learn Japanese, and it’s been a little bit rough because I don’t have someone to teach me or at least to guide me where I’m supposed to go. So when I started, it was very difficult because on the internet there’s so much material, the internet talks about a lot of things and I was lost. I didn’t know where to begin. So I think a teacher helps in this part, like where you should go, where you should start.
Bianca: I also think like, other than the fact that the teacher is a guide is also like when you have an appointment with someone. At least for me, when I have something that I need to do with someone else, I’m way more productive because I know that someone else is counting on me. Because if I’m by myself, I’m like: “I can do this tomorrow” or “maybe in half an hour” or “just lay down a little bit more” and then I end up not doing it. So it’s really good because you create a schedule, you create an appointment and you kind of make yourself do what you need to do.
Grace: Yeah, I guess that was one of the reasons that my students told me that. And also because in his case, he doesn’t like learning a new language. So we have this type of student that learns the language because he has to, not because he likes to.
Poliana: Yes. And I think another part of having a teacher, a good part of having a teacher, is about the doubts and the questions that you have. When I’m watching something in Japanese, a series, an anime, and I see they’re saying something and I’m like: “why are you saying this way? Why is this particle here?” I don’t understand. And I don’t have anyone to say “it’s because of this”. It’s just I just have to accept and be like, “OK, it’s this way”.
Grace: Also, sometimes having someone to guide you and someone to point out some mistakes that you might do.
Poliana: Yes!
Grace: Yeah, because sometimes we study and sometimes we are not aware of some mistakes that we are doing, so it helps.
Poliana: Yes, I think especially on speaking, but the intonation of the words is very different from Portuguese and from English. And I’m 100% sure I say everything wrong, but I don’t have anyone to tell me, “yeah, it’s this way, it’s this way”. I just have the dictionary that I use, a Japanese dictionary, and I try to imitate it. But I know that, 100%, for sure, I’m saying wrong a lot of the things.
Bianca: Like even when you know a little bit of the language, I remember when I was learning English and I already understood what I was reading, but I didn’t have anyone to talk to. Until I had a teacher and then I had someone to practice it. So it was a really great way to improve. I felt like I improved way faster than before, when I was just by myself.

Bianca: É, penso que ter um professor nos ajuda muito a saber exatamente o que é preciso fazer, saber onde se deve ir, qual é o próximo passo. E também, como, ter um compromisso com outra pessoa além de si mesmo. Penso que é a melhor parte do processo de aprendizagem nesse sentido.
Poliana: Sim, concordo. Na verdade, eu estou tentando aprender uma nova língua, estou tentando aprender japonês, e tem sido um pouco difícil porque não tenho alguém para me ensinar ou pelo menos para me guiar para onde devo ir. Assim, quando comecei, foi muito difícil porque a Internet tem tanto material, a Internet fala de muitas coisas e eu estava perdida. Eu não sabia por onde começar. Por isso penso que um professor ajuda nessa parte, como por exemplo onde se deve ir, por onde se deve começar.
Bianca: Também penso que, para além do fato do professor ser um guia, também é como quando se tem um compromisso com alguém. Pelo menos para mim, quando tenho algo que preciso fazer com outra pessoa, sou muito mais produtiva porque sei que outra pessoa está contando comigo. Porque se estou sozinha, eu fico meio: “Ah, posso fazer isso amanhã” ou “talvez em meia hora” ou “vou só ficar relaxada mais um pouco” e depois acabo não fazendo. Portanto, é realmente bom porque se cria um horário, se cria um compromisso e você faz o que você quer e precisa fazer.
Grace: Sim, acho que essa foi uma das razões pelas quais o meu aluno me disse isso. E também porque, no caso dele, ele não gosta de aprender uma nova língua. Portanto, temos estudantes assim também que aprendem a língua porque precisam, não porque gostam.
Poliana: Sim! E penso que outra parte de ter um professor, uma boa parte de ter um professor é sobre as dúvidas e as perguntas que surgem. Quando estou assistindo algo em japonês, uma série, um anime, e vejo que estão falando alguma coisa e eu penso: “porque é que eles tão falando dessa maneira? Porque é que essa partícula tá aqui?” Eu não compreendo. E eu não tenho ninguém para dizer “é por causa disso”. Só tenho que aceitar e dizer: “OK, é por causa disso”.
Grace: Às vezes também para ter alguém para te guiar e alguém para apontar alguns erros que você possa cometer.
Poliana: Sim!
Grace: Sim, porque às vezes estudamos e às vezes não estamos conscientes de alguns erros que estamos cometendo, então isso ajuda.
Poliana: Sim, acho que principalmente na fala, mas a entoação das palavras é muito diferente do português e do inglês. E tenho 100% de certeza que digo tudo errado, mas não tenho ninguém para me dizer, “sim, é assim, é assim”. Tenho apenas o dicionário que utilizo, um dicionário japonês, e tento imitá-lo. Mas sei que, 100%, com certeza, estou falando errado muitas das coisas.
Bianca: E mesmo quando se tem um entendimento da língua, eu me lembro de quando eu estava aprendendo inglês e já compreendia o que estava lendo, mas não tinha ninguém com quem falar sobre. Até que tive um professor e então tive alguém para praticar. Por isso, foi uma ótima maneira para melhorar. Senti que evoluí muito mais depressa do que antes, quando estava sozinha.
