Is it the world cup of soccer or the world cup of football?
The world cup starts on November 20 and here are some curiosities about the event. This year it will be hosted in Qatar and will have the participation of 32 teams from all continents of the world.
- Is it soccer or football? Despite the official name of football, the word soccer is more commonly used in the USA, where football is better known as American football. The curious thing is that the origin of the word soccer comes from England itself, the inventors of the sport. It is an abbreviation of the word association, which over time has been shaped:
Association > assoc > assocer > soccer.
- There are 27 official languages at this year’s World Cup in Qatar. However, as is customary with FIFA, all official broadcasts and communications have English as the primary language. Let’s learn to speak!
- Only 8 different teams have been world cup champions. 3 teams from South America and 5 from Europe. Brazil is the biggest winner with 5 cups, followed by Germany and Italy with 4.
- The cup in Qatar is only the 3rd time that the cup will be hosted outside the Americas-Europe axis. Japan and Korea in 2002 and South Africa in 2010 were the other times this happened, all in the 21st century.
- It is the first time that the World Cup starts in November. The reason is the location. Qatar is located on a small peninsula in the Arabian Peninsula, and in the middle of the year temperatures can reach over 50 degrees Celsius, which makes soccer practice impossible. In November and December, the average temperatures are around 22-25 degrees, which is cooler, right?
- 79 different countries have participated in the World Cups. Brazil is the only team to have participated in all of them. FIFA intends to increase the number of participating teams to 48, so that more countries can send their representatives. On the way to the twenty-second participation!
- The World Cup is the most popular sporting event in the world. An estimated 95% of the world’s people are aware of the event. Even in the USA, where the event used to lose out to the Super Bowl and the NBA Playoffs, it is expected to surpass these 2 by the end of 2022.
- A curious case. In the 1978 World Cup, Brazil placed 3rd, but was the only undefeated team in the tournament. At the time, Argentina was accused of fixing the result with Peru and thus disqualifying Brazil from the great final. Something that was never proved.
- Credit for the invention of modern football is given to the English which, at the end of the 19th century, invented “the 13 rules” that still influence the noble sport. However, historians say that the origin of the sport may be much older. In China, between 3000 and 2500 B.C., soldiers used the skull of their defeated enemies as a ball and had to hit it between two stakes stuck in the ground. It was both a sport and military training. Other studies say that the Mayans also played something like soccer. The ball had to pass through a hoop in the temple walls, and you could use both feet and hands. The sport was so intense that the leader, (or captain?) of the losing team was sentenced to death. How nice that today we just get sad by the defeat of our team.

A copa começou neste dia 20 de novembro e temos aqui algumas curiosidades sobre a copa. Esse ano será sediada no Catar e terá a participação de 32 seleções de todos os continentes do mundo.
- É soccer ou football? Apesar do nome oficial de football, a palavra soccer é mais usada nos EUA, onde football é mais conhecido como o futebol americano. O curioso é que a origem da palavra soccer vem da própria Inglaterra, inventores do esporte. Ela é abreviação da palavra Association que ao longo do tempo foi se moldando:
Association > assoc > assocer > soccer.
- Existem 27 idiomas oficiais no evento da copa esse ano no Catar. Entretanto, como é costumeiro na FIFA, todas as transmissões e comunicações oficiais têm o inglês como língua primária. Vamos aprendeeeer a spikar!
- Apenas 8 seleções diferentes têm títulos da copa do mundo. 3 seleções da América do Sul e 5 da Europa. O Brasil é o maior vencedor com 5 taças, seguido por Alemanha e Itália com 4. Rumo ao hexa!
- A copa no Catar é apenas a 3º vez que a copa é sediada fora do eixo Américas e Europa. Japão e Coréia em 2002 e África do Sul em 2010 foram as outras vezes que isso aconteceu e todas no século XXI.
- É a primeira vez que a copa começa em novembro. O motivo é o local. O Catar fica em uma pequena península, na península arábica e no meio do ano as temperaturas podem chegar a mais de 50 graus Celsius, que inviabiliza a prática do futebol. Já em novembro e dezembro as temperaturas médias ficam em torno de 22-25º, algo mais fresco, certo?
- Setenta e nove países diferentes já participaram das copas. O Brasil é a única seleção que participou de todas as copas. A FIFA pretende aumentar o número de seleções participantes para 48 para que mais países possam enviar seus representantes. Rumo a vigésima segunda participação!
- A Copa do Mundo é o evento esportivo mais popular do mundo todo. Estima-se que 95% das pessoas do mundo estão cientes do evento. Até mesmo nos EUA, onde o evento perdia para o Super Bowl e para os Playoffs da NBA, é esperado que venha a superar estes 2 ao final de 2022.
- Um caso curioso. Na copa de 1978 o Brasil ficou em 3º lugar, mas foi a única seleção invicta no torneio. Na época, a Argentina foi acusada de combinar resultado com a seleção de Peru e assim desclassificar o Brasil da grande final. Algo que nunca foi comprovado.
- O crédito pela invenção do futebol moderno é dado aos ingleses que ao final do século XIX inventaram “as 13 regras” que ainda influenciam o nobre esporte. Entretanto, historiadores dizem que a origem do esporte pode ser muito mais antiga. Na China, entre 3000 e 2500 a.c., os soldados usavam o crânio de seus inimigos vencidos como bola e tinham que acertá-la entre duas estacas presas no chão. Era tanto um esporte como treinamento militar. Outros estudos dizem que os maias também jogavam algo parecido com futebol. A bola tinha que passar por um aro nas paredes do templo e podia-se usar pés e mãos. O esporte era tão intenso que o líder, (ou capitão?) do time perdedor era condenado à morte. Que bom que hoje só ficamos tristes com a derrota do nosso time.
