Yasmin: Hello everybody! Welcome to our podcast today we are here with Rafael!Rafael: hello guys!
Yasmin: And we are going to talk about the new movie of The Hunger Games franchise: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes. So Rafa, what was your overview of the movie?
Rafael: I think like, my opinion… it could be a little bit different from others, because I love it! All the movie, everything made me feel that I needed to watch it, you know? Like people say: when you finish your franchise you finish your franchise you shouldn’t go back to it, and… finally I saw something that we should have gone back to, you know? To see the villain’s side of it. I’ve been talking with some friends about how Cruella makes all the difference in 101 Dalmatian, and I see this new Hunger Games movie as the same as Snow, you know?
Yasmin: Yes.
Rafael: Like you can see another face of the villain! You can see how he raised himself because of the war that we never saw, actually, happening in the past games! Now that we see how it was, how it started and why it started, I feel that the movie brought something to the story, you know?
Yasmin: Yes.
Rafael: Names, Faces, Motivation. So yes, I love the film and I think it is a must watch one.
Yasmin: and as you said I don’t usually come back to watch new books on a saga I already finished it, but I think the catch on this one is that we are seeing a prequel that puts a lot of new things, a lot of new theories on our heads and I think everyone that’s going to see is going to love. If you are a fan of Hunger Games you should totally watch this. What character did you like the most in the movie?
Rafael: Okay, first of all, I need to talk about Viola Davis because she’s a queen everywhere! She’s literally the GOAT, you know? I could talk about her all the time because she’s amazing in everything she’s done, she just left the “Woman King” as literally “a King” because she was amazing in the movie, and she brings here a persona that we never saw because every time that I think about Viola Davis I think about a mother, like a powerful woman, and now she’s powerful but in a Villain way, you know? You hate and love her at the same time. So…
Yasmin: And the characterization of her character is so strong. She has such a nice design and everything there is made for you to remember her.
Rafael: Yes, definitely! It’s made for you to remember her! That… what you said is specific to what I would like to point out, because I saw an interview with her and she said: Oh, I spent four hours doing all the makeup and it was worth it, because she was scary! In a good way, you know? She was there to scare people. And yes, I think Viola Davis’ Gaul, Dr.Gaul character is a must see… but to know about Tigris’ past… Tigris is Snow’s cousin and she appears in the first franchise in Hope, in the last films.
Yasmin: I believe so…
Rafael: Yes, in the last film and she is all a tiger, she is literally modified, she is literally with full makeup as a tiger and you see, “oh my gosh her name is Tigris, why did she become these?” And you see her beginning and… when you connect her to the last character in the last movie you are like “oh my God!” Why did she become Snow’s enemy when she was Snow’s best friend, you know?
Yasmin: The casting of this movie is well selected, I have my beef with Rachel Zegler…
Rafael: We are not talking about Lucy Gray here! We are not talking about her!
Yasmin: Although I don’t like her, I think she’s stepped out of the line a long time ago, but her character design is so on point, because I love characterization, I love character design, I love clothes and I think her characterization makes us differ her from Katniss, like we never think of her like a new Katniss. I also don’t think of her like the protagonist of this movie. For me the protagonist is Snow, portrayed by Tom Blythe. From what I’ve seen Tom Blythe is really good on this character, and I want to know about you! What do you think about Tom Blythe and all the other members?
Rafael: Okay, So starting with Rachel, she brought back a girl that we’ve never seen in a movie before, because she’s hopeful, she’s not the main character. Tom is doing a great job as a villain, but also the good guy in the movie, because you are cheering for him all the time and then you, “oh my God”, you need to remember “he is Snow, he’s the villain”, he’s the bad guy in the story. So, I love his job! I love Peter! When you watch Game of Thrones you think “oh Peter are you only going to have these characters for the rest of your life? I hope not because you are a great actor!” And he comes back and strikes again, you know? In that film we can see Tom as a great Snow, we can see Rachel as a great Lucy Gray and, we can see Viola Davis ruling everywhere, you know?
Yasmin: And, I believe for the fans of Hunger Games this new movie has a lot of easter eggs… Can you tell me some Easter eggs that you found as a fan of different franchises in the new movie?
Rafael: The explanation of the name Katniss, you know? When they explain: Oh, Katniss is a flower that we have around here… that they have a potato as a root and people can survive eating Katniss and, she’s that, you know? She’s the food to the revolution, she’s the sparkle of the revolution, she makes the revolution survive.
Yasmin: Also I would like to ask you…. How does this movie connect with you and why do you think people should really watch this movie?
Rafael: Connects with me because I’m a huge fan of Hunger Games.
Yasmin: Yes, me too.
Rafael: And I could see the beginning, you know? Like, you could see the beginning of everything and that brings a name to it.
Yasmin: I was going to talk right about this and because the name of the capital “Panem” is because of the Latin saying: “Panem et Circenses” where you put people in a type of circus or a type of diversion and they will not think on the problems the Society have… and Panem is the perfect example of this, because the capital watch the The Hunger Games, yes… but the districts also watch The Hunger Games. They live that and for them is life for death and I think to see the beginning of this structure is really important for what we know about The Hunger Games franchise, and how we are going to watch the movies again… thinking of Snow and his point of view on this story. I think he’s going to be amazing to rewatch the movies after you watched this new movie that just came out.
And Hunger Games is a really nice franchise. A quick reading is not a heavy reading and it brings up such important topics on society, on differences, on media and, I really believe everyone is going to love it.

Yasmin: Sim.
Rafael: Como se pudéssemos ver outro lado do vilão! Podemos ver como ele se criou por causa da guerra que nunca vimos realmente acontecer e nos jogos passados! Agora que vemos como foi, como começou e por que começou, sinto que o filme trouxe algo à história, sabe?
Yasmin: Sim.
Rafael: Nomes, rostos, motivação. Então sim, eu amo o filme e acho que é imperdível.
Yasmin: E como você disse, geralmente não volto para assistir a novos livros de uma saga que já terminei, mas acho que o diferencial deste é que estamos vendo uma prequela que traz muitas coisas novas, muitas teorias novas para as nossas cabeças, e acredito que todos que assistirem vão adorar. Se você é fã de Jogos Vorazes, deve assistir com certeza. Qual personagem você mais gostou no filme?
Rafael: Ok, primeiro, preciso falar sobre Viola Davis, porque ela é uma rainha em todos os lugares! Ela é literalmente a melhor de todos os tempos, sabe? Eu poderia falar sobre ela o tempo todo porque ela é incrível em tudo o que faz, ela simplesmente deixou “Woman King” como literalmente “um rei” porque ela foi incrível no filme, e ela traz aqui uma persona que nunca vimos, porque sempre que penso em Viola Davis, penso em uma mãe, em uma mulher poderosa. E agora ela é poderosa, mas de uma maneira vilã, sabe? Você a odeia e ama ao mesmo tempo. Então…
Yasmin: E a caracterização do personagem dela é tão forte, ela tem um design tão bom e tudo é feito para você se lembrar dela.
Rafael: Sim, definitivamente! É feito para você se lembrar dela! O que você disse é exatamente o que eu gostaria de destacar, porque vi uma entrevista com ela e ela disse: “Ah, passei quatro horas fazendo toda a maquiagem e valeu a pena, porque ela estava assustadora!” De uma maneira boa, sabe? Ela estava lá para assustar as pessoas. E sim, acho que o personagem Gaul da Viola Davis é imperdível, mas para saber sobre o passado da Tigris. Tigris é prima do Snow e aparece na primeira franquia em Esperança, nos últimos filmes.
Yasmin: Eu acredito que sim.
Rafael: Sim, no último filme, ela é toda uma tigresa, ela é literalmente modificada, ela está literalmente com maquiagem completa como uma tigresa e você vê, nossa, o nome dela é Tigris, por que ela se tornou assim? E você vê o começo dela e quando você a conecta ao último personagem no último filme, você fica tipo, “meu Deus!” Por que ela se tornou inimiga do Snow quando era a melhor amiga do Snow, sabe?
Yasmin: A escalação deste filme é bem escolhida, eu tenho minhas ressalvas talvez com Rachel Zegler.
Rafael: Não estamos falando de Lucy Gray aqui! Não estamos falando dela!
Yasmin: Embora eu não goste dela, acho que ela saiu da linha há muito tempo, mas o design do personagem dela está tão certeiro porque eu amo caracterização, amo design de personagens, amo roupas e acho que a caracterização dela nos faz diferenciá-la de Katniss, como nunca a pensamos como uma nova Katniss. Eu também não a vejo como a protagonista deste filme, para mim o protagonista é o Snow, interpretado por Tom Blythe. Pelo que vi, Tom Blythe está realmente bom nesse personagem, e quero saber de você! O que você acha de Tom Blythe e de todos os outros membros.
Rafael: Ok, começando por Rachel, ela trouxe de volta uma garota que nunca vimos em um filme antes porque ela é esperançosa, ela não é a personagem principal. Tom está fazendo um ótimo trabalho como vilão, mas também como o cara bom no filme, porque você está torcendo por ele o tempo todo e então, meu Deus, você precisa se lembrar de que ele é o Snow, ele é o vilão, ele é o cara mau na história. Então, adoro o trabalho dele! Adoro o Peter! Quando você assiste Game of Thrones, pensa: “Oh, Peter, você vai ter esses personagens para o resto da sua vida?” Espero que não, porque você é um ótimo ator! E ele volta e arrasa, sabe? Nesse filme, podemos ver Tom como um grande Snow, podemos ver Rachel como uma ótima Lucy Gray e podemos ver Viola Davis dominando tudo, sabe?
Yasmin: E, acredito que para os fãs de Jogos Vorazes, este novo filme tem muitos easter eggs. Você pode me contar alguns easter eggs que você encontrou como fã de diferentes franquias no novo filme?
Rafael: A explicação do nome Katniss, sabe? Quando eles explicam: “Ah, Katniss é uma flor que temos aqui, que tem uma batata como raiz e as pessoas podem sobreviver comendo Katniss e ela é isso, sabe? Ela é a comida para a revolução, ela é a faísca da revolução, ela faz a revolução sobreviver.
Yasmin: Também gostaria de te perguntar como esse filme se conecta com você e por que você acha que as pessoas realmente deveriam assistir a este filme?
Rafael: Conecta comigo porque sou um grande fã de Jogos Vorazes.
Yasmin: Sim, eu também.
Rafael: E eu pude ver o começo, sabe? Tipo, você pode ver o início de tudo e isso dá um nome a isso.
Yasmin: Eu ia falar exatamente sobre isso e porque o nome da capital Panem é por causa do ditado latino: Panem et Circenses, onde você coloca as pessoas em um tipo de circo ou distração e elas não pensarão nos problemas que a sociedade tem. E Panem é o exemplo perfeito disso, porque a capital assiste aos Jogos Vorazes, sim, mas os distritos também assistem aos Jogos Vorazes. Eles vivem isso e para eles é vida ou morte, e eu acho que ver o início dessa estrutura é realmente importante para o que sabemos sobre a franquia Jogos Vorazes, e como vamos assistir aos filmes novamente pensando no Snow e na perspectiva dele sobre essa história. Acho que vai ser incrível reassistir aos filmes depois de ver este novo filme que acabou de sair. E Jogos Vorazes é uma franquia muito boa, é uma leitura rápida, não é uma leitura pesada e aborda tópicos tão importantes sobre a sociedade, as diferenças, a mídia, e eu realmente acredito que todos vão adorar.
