Em 2019, o empresário Scooter Braun adquiriu a Big Machine Label Group, a gravadora original de Taylor Swift, e, com isso, os direitos autorais das gravações originais dos seis primeiros álbuns da artista. Taylor expressou sua frustração nas redes sociais, alegando que considerava que seu legado estava sendo vendido a alguém que “um dia quis destruí-lo”, nas palavras da cantora. Taylor sequer teve a oportunidade de comprar os direitos das gravações antes da venda da gravadora, o que a levou a tomar uma decisão estratégica: regravar seus álbuns antigos e criar versões “Taylor’s Version” para ter total autonomia e controle sobre suas músicas.
