Yasmin: Hello everybody. My name is Yasmin and we are here today to talk about Halloween. So we are here with Marina. Hello, Marina. How are you?Marina: I’m great. How about you?
Yasmin: I’m fine too, thank you very much. And about Halloween, what do you think about Halloween, Marina?
Marina: Spooky season has come. Yes, I love it.
Yasmin: We thought to talk a little about the history of Halloween. So what do you know about the history of Halloween, Marina?
Marina: Well, I know a little bit because as I’m a teacher, I usually have to search these kinds of things, these kinds of things to talk to my students about it. So I know that Halloween has its roots in the ancient Celtic festival, a Celtic festival called Samhain, and it was a pagan religious celebration to welcome the harvests at the end of the summer. And when people used to go to these parties, they used to light bonfires, candles and also wear costumes.
Yasmin: Because on Halloween, people believe that the Hell’s Gates are open. So all kinds of periods, yes, are like rounding around the world. And so yes, costumes are for tricking the devils and the ghosts to not harm human beings. That’s really interesting because Halloween, being a pagan like holiday, it is obvious that when the church came to colonize the things, it would be made a bad thing.
So the Pope, his name was Pope Gregory the Third, thought that Halloween was not a nice holiday to enjoy for Christians. So he decreed that the 1st of November were to be worshiped as the All Saints Day to make peace for the Halloween night. So you may cheer for Halloween on the 31. But then on the All Saints Day, you need to go to the church and confess.
Marina: And also, Halloween became popular in the United States and Canada because of the Irish. Many people from Ireland went to the US. They like, ran off the crises and the hungry. So they took with them these legends, these costumes, these parties. And that’s how it arrived in the US.
Yasmin: That’s really interesting because there is so much history to a simple, simple holiday. My kids love to talk about trick or treat, and they really wanted to do trick or treating, but here in Brazil we don’t have that culture.
Marina: Yes. Unfortunately, yes.
Yasmin: But it’s really interesting. And you told about lighting bonfires to repel evil. That reminds me of the story of Jack o Lantern. I don’t know if you know the story of Jack o Lantern.
Marina: Yes, I’ve heard many, many stories. Actually. I don’t know which one is the most accurate one, but…
Yasmin: I believe all of them that are a little true, but my favorite is that Jack o Lantern was a guy that was not a nice person, and one day he was drinking with the devil himself and they made a deal about, I don’t know what it was about, but Jack ends up losing that deal and the devil cuts off his head. And in its place, the devil puts on a pumpkin head with the carvings of the eyes and the mouth, and it is said that you need to light a candle inside the head so, jack o lantern spirits don’t come looking for your house and don’t do trick in your house in the Halloween. It’s really interesting.
Marina: Yeah, and that’s why people nowadays still do this thing with the pumpkins. They carve the pumpkins, they light the candles inside the pumpkins, they place them outside of their homes and they party a lot with the pumpkins. Also, it’s because it’s the harvest season. They have lots of pumpkins, so they make lots of recipes and foods with these pumpkins. They have pumpkin pie, pumpkin juice, and many kinds of sweet candies with pumpkin.
Yasmin: And one thing that’s really common nowadays for people our age is the spiced pumpkin latte from Starbucks.
Marina: Halloween is a very nice season. It’s not about bad or doing bad things. It’s not about evil. It’s. About just enjoying these guys and celebrating an ancient celebration in which they. They just wanted to be disguised. Disguised to repel the bad spirits. It’s not to make bad things. So enjoy and don’t worry about it.

É realmente interessante.
Marina: Sim, e é por isso que as pessoas ainda fazem essa coisa com as abóboras. Elas esculpem as abóboras, acendem velas dentro delas, colocam-nas do lado de fora de suas casas e fazem muitas festas com as abóboras. Além disso, é por causa da safra. Eles têm muitas abóboras, então fazem muitas receitas e pratos com essas abóboras. Eles têm torta de abóbora, suco de abóbora e muitos tipos de doces com abóbora.
Yasmin: E uma coisa que é muito comum hoje em dia para pessoas da nossa idade é o “spiced pumpkin latte” (café com abóbora temperada).
