Aprender e utilizar uma língua é processo relacionado à forma como recebemos e expressamos informações (input e output), normalmente dividido em quatro habilidades: leitura, compreensão, escrita e fala. As formas como cada um prefere estudar e praticar cada uma dessas habilidades variam de pessoa para pessoa, mas o que se tem como consenso entre professores e estudiosos da área é que a exposição constante e prazerosa, por meio de assuntos e materiais que você já gosta e utiliza são parte indispensável desse processo; ou seja, o sistema de repetição espaçada e a motivação – os dois pilares do autodidatismo estruturado.
Encarando dessa forma, o que você precisa para aprender um idioma é de uma rotina de estudos e de materiais do seu interesse. Então vamos resolver isso agora!
É óbvio que se você buscar no Google “melhores sites para aprender idiomas”, ele vai te apresentar uma lista de sites com “o da coruja verde”, “o da torre bíblica”, ou ainda artigos que listam “os 14 sites para aprender de graça”, e por aí vai… Claro que se tratam de boas opções, pois sendo sites de ensino de idiomas, o que eles querem é te vender um produto. O próprio site da Idioma Independente tem textos e podcasts que você pode usar para aprender.
Minha proposta hoje é diferente. Nesse artigo vou te mostrar os três sites que eu mais uso como professor independente de inglês e italiano, e como estudante independente de russo: autodidatismo raiz mesmo!
Leitura e compreensão (input)
A Wikipédia é de longe o site mais versátil para praticar a leitura. A variedade de assuntos e a quantidade de idiomas que o site abarca são insuperáveis por qualquer outra fonte. A qualidade dos artigos também têm crescido muito nos últimos anos, contando com editores e tradutores qualificados. Para se ter uma ideia, o artigo “Isabel II do Reino Unido”, o mais acessado de 2022, tem tradução para 201 idiomas, e na versão em inglês conta com leitura em áudio.
O Youtube segue o mesmo princípio, e em multimídia. São milhões de horas de áudio e vídeo sobre basicamente todos os assuntos possíveis e em praticamente todos os idiomas: de “receita de bolo da sua tia” à “Ciência da Computação no MIT”. Usando apenas essas duas plataformas você teria conteúdo virtualmente infinito sobre todos os assuntos, em qualquer idioma, pro resto da vida.
Escrita e fala (output)
O Google Tradutor é a ferramenta mais simples para te ajudar a praticar o output. Ele possui funções de correção de texto que te ajudam com pequenos erros de ortografia, além da possibilidade de “traduzir por voz”, em que você pode praticar sua pronúncia e medir quão bem seria compreendido (se o tradutor te entender, provavelmente um humano também entenderá).
Aprender uma língua sozinho de forma independente pode parecer um grande desafio, mas com algumas instruções básicas e o tipo de material certo pode-se conseguir um grande progresso.

It’s obvious that if you search on Google for “best sites to learn languages,” it will present you with a list of sites like “the one with the green owl,” “the one with the biblical tower,” or even articles listing “the top 14 sites to learn for free,” and so on… Of course, these are good options because they are language learning sites, and what they want is to sell you a product. The Idioma Independente website itself has texts and podcasts that you can use to learn.
My proposal today is different. In this article, I will show you the three sites I use the most as an independent English and Italian teacher and as an independent student of Russian: true self-learning!
Reading and comprehension (input)
Wikipedia is by far the most versatile site for practicing reading. The variety of subjects and the number of languages the site covers are unmatched by any other source. The quality of the articles has also improved greatly in recent years, with qualified editors and translators. For example, the article “Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom,” the most accessed in 2022, has translations in 201 languages, and the English version has audio reading.
YouTube follows the same principle, but in multimedia. There are millions of hours of audio and video on basically every possible subject and in practically every language: from “your aunt’s cake recipe” to “Computer Science at MIT.” Using only these two platforms, you would have virtually infinite content on all subjects, in any language, for the rest of your life.
Writing and speaking (output)
Google Translate is the simplest tool to help you practice output. It has text correction functions that assist you with minor spelling errors, as well as the possibility to “translate by voice,” where you can practice your pronunciation and gauge how well you would be understood (if the translator understands you, a human probably will too).
Learning a language on your own independently may seem like a big challenge, but with some basic instructions and the right kind of material, significant progress can be achieved.”
