Julia: Hello Bianca, I’m good and you?
Bianca: I’m great too! So… a little bird told me that you also went to Ireland, and I also moved there, and I lived there for a while. How was your experience living in Ireland?
Julia: I spent a year living in Dublin, and it was a fantastic experience, I had never thought that it would be so enriching as it was, to live abroad for a while. It was something really different from the life that I was used to, and even from what I was expecting as well.
Bianca: yeah! For me too. I think one of the best experiences for me was having this contact with other cultures and I think whenever we talk about Ireland the first thing that comes to our mind is the Saint Patrick’s Day, that is on March 17, right?
Julia: Yes, the Saint Patrick’s is something that is really amazing, I never saw so many Irish people excited for a festival, as I saw when it was coming close to Saint Patrick’s. It was really fun to see that.
Bianca: Oh, that’s cool. I unfortunately didn’t experience the Saint Patrick’s because when I moved there it was already May, and I had to come back in January. But I always wanted to go there, because from what I heard it’s really similar to the carnival here in Brazil. So, they have a lot of music and people on the street partying, and drinking, and a lot of food as well.
Julia: Yes, they have a parade. It’s really similar to Brazil. The parade is massive, they have floats with different themes. And the biggest families from Ireland, they go in the parade on the top of cars, or electric trios just like Carnival, it’s really fun.
Bianca: And did you try the green beer they have there?
Julia: I didn’t have courage to do it, because here in Brazil when we have the Saint Patrick’s it’s only the green beer, it’s only the color, it’s only green, but it’s the same beer. There, the beer is not only green but also has mint syrup, they put mint syrup in anything. I used to work in a McDonals there and we had this Saint Patrick’s milkshake, that would be a green milkshake that was mint flavor.
Bianca: Oh my god. Yeah, so I really wanted to try the green beer someday, maybe I will. But when we started talking about Saint Patrick’s I got curious and I went to look it up online, and I saw that they started celebrating Saint Patrick’s Day because, of course they wanted to celebrate Saint Patrick’s life, and the party happens on the anniversary of his death. But since it happens usually during the lent period, people didn’t used to be able to eat, to be able to celebrate because of Easter, so then, the Catholic church opened an exception for this date in particular. So only during this period you are able to eat whatever you want, and drink, and party, and go to the streets, and I think that’s really nice, and I think that is what makes people so excited about it.

Julia: Passei um ano morando em Dublin, e foi uma experiência fantástica, nunca havia pensado que seria tão enriquecedora como foi, viver no exterior por um tempo. Foi algo realmente diferente da vida a que eu estava acostumada, e até do que eu estava esperando também.
Bianca: Sim! Para mim também. Acho que uma das melhores experiências para mim foi ter este contato com outras culturas e acho que sempre que falamos da Irlanda, a primeira coisa que nos vem à mente é o Dia de São Patrício, ou seja, em 17 de março, certo?
Julia: Sim, o “Saint Patrick’s” é algo realmente incrível, eu nunca vi tantos irlandeses animados para um festival, como vi quando ele estava se aproximando do “Saint Patrick’s”. Foi realmente divertido ver isso.
Bianca: Oh, isso é legal. Infelizmente eu não experimentei o Dia de São Patrício porque quando me mudei para lá já era maio, e tive que voltar em janeiro. Mas eu sempre quis ir, porque pelo que ouvi, é realmente parecido com o carnaval aqui no Brasil. Então, eles têm muita música e pessoas na rua festejando, bebendo, e muita comida também.
Julia: Sim, eles têm um desfile. É muito parecido com o Brasil. O desfile é enorme, eles têm carros alegóricos com temas diferentes. E as maiores famílias da Irlanda, eles vão no desfile no topo dos carros, ou trios elétricos como no Carnaval, é realmente divertido.
Bianca: E você experimentou a cerveja verde que eles têm lá?
Julia: Não tive coragem de experimentar, porque aqui no Brasil quando temos o Dia de São Patrício é apenas a cerveja verde, é apenas a cor, é apenas verde, mas é a mesma cerveja. Lá, a cerveja não é só verde, mas também tem xarope de menta, eles colocam xarope de menta em qualquer coisa. Eu costumava trabalhar em um McDonalds lá e tínhamos este milkshake de Saint Patrick, que seria um milkshake verde com sabor de hortelã.
Bianca: Oh, meu Deus. Sim, então eu realmente queria experimentar a cerveja verde um dia, talvez eu experimente. Mas quando começamos a falar sobre Saint Patrick’s eu fiquei curiosa e fui procurar na internet, e vi que eles começaram a celebrar o Dia de São Patrício porque, é claro, eles queriam celebrar a vida de São Patrício, e a festa acontece no aniversário de sua morte. Mas como isso acontece normalmente durante o período de quaresma, as pessoas não costumavam poder comer ou celebrar por causa da Páscoa, então, a igreja católica abriu uma exceção para este dia em particular, de modo que somente durante este período você pode comer o que quiser, beber, festejar e ir para as ruas, e eu acho isso muito legal e acho que é isso que deixa as pessoas tão animadas com isso.
