Juliana: Hi Ludmila, I’m good and you?
Ludmila: Yeah, I’m great too! So, today we’re gonna talk a little bit about Black History Month. It’s celebrated in February, so let’s use this opportunity to talk about black figures that inspire us.
Juliana: Yeah, I’m really excited. So the first person that comes into my mind is Queen Latifah because I saw her movies with my dad and she was so iconic and funny and I just… Today I laugh so much with her, you know?
Ludmila: Yeah, I really love Queen Latifah as well. She’s really funny. I remember watching her movies as well. Does she inspire you on a personal level?
Juliana: Yeah, I have a dream to be an actress, so since I was a child I watched her in her movies and I saw her on the screen, you know? And I really love comedy. She was such an inspiration for me.
Ludmila: I didn’t know that you wanted to be an actress. That’s so cool! I think seeing people who look like us on the screen, it helps us to think that we’re also able to do that, to reach that place. Yeah, that’s why representation is so important. Seeing someone who looks like you achieving great things.
Juliana: Yeah. And you?
Ludmila: So my inspiration… The first one that comes to mind since you mentioned Queen Latifah’s movies, to me it was Whoopi Goldberg and I remember watching “Sister Act”, her movie with all of the nuns singing. It was really important in my English learning process. I remember watching the DVD over and over again with subtitles and without subtitles and she was a really iconic figure to me at the time. I also remember watching “Call Me Claus”, which is a Christmas movie in which she becomes Santa Claus. So she’s also really funny. I love her comedic timing. But also the thing that made me admire Whoopi Goldberg even more was that she used her voice, her popularity and her influence for the sake of helping other people and giving voice to people who were not heard. So children, homeless people. She spoke about AIDS research and LGBTQIA+ rights in the 80s when no one really cared about it. So I think using your voice and your platform to help others and bring others to the top with you, it’s really important. But yeah, she’s an iconic figure to me. I love her. Do you have any other aside from Queen Latifah that really inspires you?
Juliana: Yeah, I have another person. It’s kind of funny because she’s so young. It’s Zendaya.
Ludmila: I love Zendaya!
Juliana: She’s so young and she’s so brilliant, you know. She’s an amazing actress. She’s so powerful and she knows what she wants. She’s an icon for me.
Ludmila: She’s amazing. I love her fashion sense. And yeah, I agree. She’s probably a very important figure for black girls growing up right now as well. Seeing someone like her taking such important roles. So to me, a more recent figure would be Janelle Monáe. Do you know her? The singer and actress?
Juliana: Yeah, I know her songs.
Ludmila: Yeah, she’s amazing. She’s a black queer woman. And she also speaks up for many of the struggles in each community that she belongs to. Like the black community and the feminist community and also the LGBTQIA+ community.
Juliana: I didn’t know she was queer.
Ludmila: Oh yeah, she’s queer and proud about that. And yeah, I also love her lyrics. And the way that she makes her art is really unique to me. Like, when she first started, she used to wear only black and white suits. And it was really unusual for pop female artists.
Juliana: So she’s also a fashionist?
Ludmila: Yeah, and known for that, really. Her fashion sense is also very unique. And she uses her art to put out her thoughts and ideas in the world. There is one lyric of her in one of her songs that is like: “categorize me, I defy every label” and I always felt that it was so empowering, in a sense. So yeah, I really admire her as well. She’s a recent figure that I really admire.
Juliana: This is incredible. I love it. I don’t know so much about her, but I will check it out.
Ludmila: Yeah, I definitely recommend her songs and her as a person. She’s also a great actress. Thank you for talking with me a little bit about your icons. And I hope we can continue to share our inspirations with one another in the future.
