Daniel: So Manu, there’s this whole discussion about physical books versus e-books, digital books. What’s your opinion about that?
Manu: I’ll be honest, I like practical stuff, so I’m very devoted to my Kindle. You know, I prefer to have an e-reader, and I do have a Kindle. Actually I have a few of them, because it is so easy to carry all my books in one place, like it has such a large storage space. I can literally have everything there, and it saves my position in the book so I don’t have to worry about, you know, bookmarkers and that sort of stuff. But I totally get people who prefer physical books, it’s a totally different experience, you have different textures, you have the smell of the book, which people really love. Yeah, I think Kindle is specially good for people who have, you know, difficulty reading, because you can adjust the brightness, you can adjust the size of the font of the book, they have a special font for people who have dyslexia, which can be really great, you know, if you have this sort of issue. So I think in a matter of accessibility it’s really helpful to people.
Daniel: Something that made me really appreciate a Kindle, also, is when you have to move houses, and you have to carry all of your books.
Manu: That is a big issue for me as well, because I have moved places a lot in the last five years, and you always break and lose stuff. That’s unavoidable. And a Kindle you put it in your purse, and they fit. So I have one Kindle that I use specifically at home and I have a Kindle that I leave in my purse, so that I have both of them, and when I leave the house and I go somewhere and I want to read, my place is saved in the Kindle that it’s in my purse. So I like that, I like how easy it is to read when you have a Kindle.
Daniel: I love physical books, it’s great to look at your bookshelf and see all the things you love there on display, sometimes the cover arts are also amazing, so I love them, but I have really come to appreciate the Kindle more recently.
Manu: There’s also the factor that if you like indie books, you don’t read only published literature, you can only find most indie books in an ebook format, because the publishing procedure is much more complicated than putting something out there, on the Internet. So if you like, and I do love indie books from small authors.
Daniel: And, okay, so we are talking about books. And what about literary genres, what do you usually like to read?
Manu: My favorite by far is romance, in general. But I prefer historical romances and paranormal romances. Those are my life. I’m not a huge fan of contemporary stuff in general, I don’t like books in general, not just romances, that are set in a contemporary setting with real life subjects. I like my literature to take me away from reality and I like this idea of being in a completely different world than the one we live in.
Daniel: I understand the part about wanting to escape because for me, regarding books, I’m all about fantasy. Did you use those kinds of things that you just told me about when you were learning english?
Manu: I began to study english at a roughly young age, I was probably about 12 or 11 even, and at the time I, well of course I didn’t have money, because I was a pre-teen. So the Internet was my easiest access to English content, and because of that I actually read a lot of fanfiction in English. So fanfiction was my gateway to literature.
Daniel: Something I heard, maybe it’s not true, I never really checked, not much of a fanfic person, but I respect it. Did Twilight start as a fanfic?
Manu: I’m pretty sure that Twilight did not start as a fanfiction. But I know for a fact that a lot of books that came afterwards did start as fanfics of Twilight, the most famous one being Fifty Shades of Grey.
Daniel: And you also were telling before that the literary genres themselves are different when talking about fanfics?
Manu: Yes. Because in fanfiction we don’t divide stuff into fantasy, and paranormal, and historical, like we do with traditional literature. We have other types of divisions. For example we have fluff, that is a story that is cute, that doesn’t have much serious things, there is, of course, smut, which is, you know, basically explicit sexual scenes. There’s hurt comfort, that is exactly what it says, you have a lot of sadness and then you deal with the sadness in a comforting way. Another famous one is omega verse, which I’m not going to tell you about. You are going to have to look it up if you are a very brave person, but I will tell you it’s a little weird.
