Ygor: I think Christmas is one of my favorite holidays, because it’s a time of the year that all of my relatives come here to my house, and we get together and have this celebration. And one of the things that I think it’s really interesting is the difference between our Christmas, here in Brazil, and Christmas in other countries, such as the United States.
So, for example, during this time of the year I always watch the movie Home Alone, that Macaulay Culkin played the role of the boy, you know? And I see that there, in the US or other countries, such as Canada, for example, they have a different kind, like I said, a different kind of holiday, you know? Because over there it snows, over here in Brazil it’s a time of the year that is really hot, because it’s the spring, but it’s already very hot, in December. So… it’s different. I’d like to go there, to the US, maybe some day to have this kind of holiday, but I think it wouldn’t be the same without my family, you know? But I think it’s interesting to watch these movies and how different it is.
Anyway, here we eat a lot during this holiday, all of the family come here together, here in Brazil it’s like a party. Some people go out on this day, they celebrate. I think the only difference between here and other countries is that it’s really hot here. So like I said, it’s one of my favorites holidays, I guess my favorite holiday, because it’s a time of the year that I don’t work, so I spend time resting with my family and I can go to my wife’s family’s house, that’s pretty good. I really enjoy Christmas, one of my favorite holidays.
Grace: As the end of the year approaches, we start to see Christmas decorations everywhere, and one of these elements of decoration is the wreath. Basically a wreath is an arrangement of flowers, leaves or stems, passing in a ring or circle and people usually hang it on the front door of their houses during Christmas time. Its origin it’s pretty ancient, actually. The wreath turns out to date back to Roman times, when they would place them on their heads, during celebrations, representing victory and success.
And there is also a religious symbolism, of course, it’s said that when Jesus wore a crown of holy branches, the white berries turned red. The wreath also would be decorated using four candles, three candles would be placed around the outside of the wreath and one in the middle, representing the light of the world or Jesus.
Equally important was the material form of the wreath, the evergreen tree. Evergreen trees were a species looked upon with admiration, because they survived the harshness of winter. It was a symbol of power, resilience and, in a way, of hope. Together, the circular shape of the evergreen material makes the wreath a representation of eternal life. Finally, berries were added to the wreath to represent fertility.

Ygor: Eu acho que o Natal é um dos meus feriados favoritos, porque é uma época do ano em que todos os meus parentes vêm aqui a minha casa, e nós nos reunimos e temos esta celebração. E uma das coisas que eu acho realmente interessante é a diferença entre nosso Natal, aqui no Brasil, e o Natal em outros países, tais como os Estados Unidos.
Então, por exemplo, durante esta época do ano eu sempre assisto o filme Esqueceram de mim, que Macaulay Culkin interpretou o papel do menino, sabe? E vejo que lá, nos Estados Unidos ou em outros países, como o Canadá, por exemplo, eles têm um tipo diferente, como eu disse, um tipo diferente de época de festas, sabe? Porque lá neva, aqui no Brasil é uma época do ano realmente quente, porque é a primavera, mas já está muito quente, em dezembro. Então… é diferente. Eu gostaria de ir lá, aos Estados Unidos, talvez um dia, para ter este tipo de férias, mas acho que não seria o mesmo sem minha família, sabe? Mas acho que é interessante ver estes filmes e como é diferente.
De qualquer forma, aqui comemos muito durante este feriado, toda a família vem aqui junta, aqui no Brasil é como uma festa. Algumas pessoas saem neste dia, elas comemoram. Eu acho que a única diferença entre aqui e outros países é que aqui está realmente quente. Então, como eu disse, é um dos meus feriados favoritos, acho que meu feriado favorito, porque é uma época do ano em que eu não trabalho, então eu passo o tempo descansando com minha família e posso ir à casa da família da minha esposa, isso é muito bom. Eu gosto muito do Natal, um dos meus feriados favoritos.
Grace: Quando o final do ano se aproxima, começamos a ver decorações de Natal em toda parte, e um desses elementos de decoração é a guirlanda. Basicamente uma guirlanda é um arranjo de flores, folhas ou caules, passando em um anel ou círculo e as pessoas costumam pendurá-lo na porta da frente de suas casas durante a época do Natal. Na verdade, sua origem é bem antiga. A guirlanda acaba datando à época romana, quando eles as colocavam em suas cabeças, durante as celebrações, representando vitória e sucesso.
E há também um simbolismo religioso, é claro, diz-se que quando Jesus usava uma coroa de ramos de azevinho, as bagas brancas ficavam vermelhas. A guirlanda também é decorada com quatro velas, três velas seriam colocadas ao redor da parte externa da guirlanda e uma no meio, representando a luz do mundo ou Jesus.
Igualmente importante era a forma material da guirlanda, a árvore perene. As árvores perenes eram uma espécie olhada com admiração, porque sobreviveram à dureza do inverno. Era um símbolo de poder, de resiliência e, de certa forma, de esperança. Juntas, a forma circular do material sempre-verde faz da guirlanda uma representação da vida eterna. Finalmente, as bagas foram adicionadas à guirlanda para representar a fertilidade.
